Kittson County 35502
This bridge crosses over the South Branch Two Rivers and consisted of a 3-span precast channel span superstructure supported on concrete abutments and concrete pier caps founded on steel piling. Each span is 31 ft long and the total bridge length is 93 ft. For this rehab project, the precast channels were removed and replaced with a timber panel-laminated deck and crash-tested timber railing.
A timber panel-lam superstructure was selected over a concrete beam or concrete slab because: 1) structure depth of timber deck closely matched existing structure depth of precast channels, 2) construction time to install timber deck panels was shorter than a concrete option, and 3) dead load of timber deck was significantly less than concrete options.
The rehabilitation of this bridge included: removal of precast channel span deck and deficient metal railing, application of special surface finish to inplace concrete abutments and pier caps, painting steel pier piling, installation of timber panel-laminated deck, installation of crash-tested timber railing on bridge, installation of new plate beam guardrail at each corner of bridge, and installation of new bituminous wear course.
