Lyon County Bridge 42576

Bridge 42576 has been selected as a winner of the 2020 MnDOT-AGC Bridge Construction Award in the under-$1.5 million construction cost category. The bridge was designed by Erickson Engineering and built by the Robert R. Schroeder Construction Company. It is located on County Road 83 and crosses over the Redwood River in Camden State Park, and consists of a 3-span continuous concrete slab supported on concrete integral abutments and pile bent piers encased in concrete.   The railing is a combination of concrete posts and intermediate timber posts with horizontal timber rail and curb.  Architectural surface treatment was used on the abutments, piers, concrete rail posts, and edge of deck slab.

Erickson Engineering’s services included hydraulic analysis; geotechnical, hazardous waste, and utility coordination; permits; preliminary and final bridge design; specifications; and cost estimate.

According to Kevin Western, MnDOT State Bridge Engineer with the MnDOT Bridge Office:

“Notable things about this project that resulted in high marks during judging include:

  • Innovations: The contractor was able to match the appearance of the Camden Park specific CCC/WPA/Rustic Style Historic District buildings to create pier and pilaster forming. In addition, the contractor was required to construct the bridges during off season.
  • Complexity: Bridge construction was presented challenges in the form of high water and flooding, park access needs and aesthetic requirements to match historic park properties.
  • Timeliness: The contractor was able to complete the bridges largely during off season and enable park access during peak season.
  • Workmanship: The resulting formliner and application of staining has created a historic look in an idyllic park setting for all to enjoy. The bridge has some longitudinal cracks in the slab, but the overall appearance makes the 3 bridges on the project stand out as an achievement to high quality public works.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in the project.
